  • Algonkian Regional Park (Loudoun Co.)

From I-495, take Rt. 7 west 11 miles to Cascades Parkway north, and drive 3 miles to the park entrance, proceed on Fairway Drive turning left onto Volcano Island Drive, then turn right into parking lot.   • Aquia Landing Beach Park, Stafford, VA

From southbound I-95 towards Stafford, take exit 140 to Stafford, then left (east) on Courthouse Road (County Road 630), go 3.5 miles and turn right on Andrew Chapel Road (CR 629), go 0.9 miles and under the railroad bridge to a slight left onto Brooke Road (CR 608), go 4.4 miles to the park entrance, continue past park entrance gate to the parking lot at the end of the road.  Meet in the parking lot.2846 Brooke Road, Stafford, VA  22554  (N38 23.014 W77 19.193)

  • Banshee Reeks (Loudoun Co.)

From I-495 (Capital Beltway), take Rte. 7, or Dulles Toll Rd. and Greenway, west to Leesburg. Continue west on Rte. 7 to Rte. 15 South exit. Go south on Rte.15 a short distance to Rte. 621 (Evergreen Mills Rd.). Turn left on Rte. 621, and go 4-5 mi. to Rte. 771 (The Woods Rd.). Turn right on Rte. 771, go 1 mi., and turn left into Banshee Reeks nature preserve. Pass two houses on right; third house on left is temporary visitor center.   • Ben Brenman Park (Alexandria)

From I-395 take Duke St east about 1.5 miles to the park entrance on the right.  Follow entrance road to the parking lot.  Meet at the pond.  4800 Brenman Park Drive, Alexandria, VA  22804  (N38 48.547 W77 06.771).   • Blandy Experimental Farm (Clarke County)

Take I-66 West to Rt. 17 North (Exit 23, sign says Delaplane/Paris). Follow Route 17 North to its junction with Route 50 West at a traffic light.   • Bles Park(Loudoun County)

Take Rt 7 west to Loudoun County Pkwy. Turn right onto Loudon County Pkwy and proceed 0.2 mi. Turn right onto George Washington Blvd and go 0.8 mi. to Riverside Pkwy. Turn left and proceed 1.1 mi. to park entrance at 44830 Riverside Pkwy.  Meet at parking lot.

  • Bluebird Trail (Clark’s Crossing Park)

From I-495, exit onto Chain Bridge Rd (VA-123) toward Vienna. Continue on Maple Ave (still 123) in Vienna, turn onto Beulah Road.  Continue for about one mile until a left turn onto Clark’s Crossing Road.  Continue to the end of Clark’s Crossing and park at the parking lot overlooking the W&OD Trail.   (No address.)

  • Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship (Loudoun County)

The Blue Ridge Center is 2 miles from the Potomac River in northwest Loudoun County, Va., 18 miles from Leesburg, Va., 15 miles from Frederick, Md., and 5 miles from Harpers Ferry, W.Va. From Leesburg: Go west on U.S. 7, right on Rt. 9., then right on Rt. 671/Harpers Ferry Rd. Go 6 miles to the Blue Ridge Center entrance on the left, just past the Neersville Fire Station. From Frederick: Go south on U.S. 340. Cross the Potomac River and go left on Rt. 671/Harpers Ferry Rd.   • Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park (Prince William Co.)  

From I-95: Take Rt. 234 North (Exit 152B); travel 7.5 miles and make a left onto Independent Hill Drive. Then make immediate right ont Rt 619 (Bristow Road). Travel 7 miles and turn left onto Iron Brigade Unit Avenue. The parking lot is located on your left at the traffic circle. From I-66; Take Rt. 234 South (Exit 44). Travel 4.5 miles and turn right onto Rt. 28 (Nokesville Road). Travel 1.5 miles and turn left onto Rt. 619 (Bristow Road).   • Burke Lake Park (Fairfax Co.)

From I-495, take exit 54 west (Braddock Road). Stay in right lane if you are coming from the North. On Braddock Road, go 1.5 miles and turn left onto Burke Lake Road. Go 4.7 miles and turn left onto Route 123 (Ox Road). Turn left at second traffic light (big parking signs)  and then turn left immediately after the entrance booth.  Park in the first lot on the right (by the mini-golf course)  7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA  22039  (N38 45.793 W77 18.338)

  • Cub Run Stream Valley Park (Fairfax Co.)

From the junction of I-66 and I-495, follow I-66 W to US 29 S in Centreville. Take exit 52 from I-66 W. Turn right onto US 29 S, go 1.5 mi. and turn right onto Pleasant Valley Rd (State Rt 609), go 0.9 mi. and turn right onto Blueridge View Dr, go 0.3 mi. and turn right onto Hidden Canyon Rd, go 0.3 mi. and turn left onto Stillfield Pl, go 0.3 mi to 15077 Stillfield Pl on the left. Park in the neighborhood side streets nearest the front of 15077 Stillfield Pl. Meet at the entrance to the park to the left of the house at 15077. Avoid any parking that blocks driveways. There are several spots along the trail that could be under water. If there have been recent rains, recommend wearing mud boots or waterproof shoes.

  • Claude Moore Park, Vestal’s Gap Visitor Center, 21544 Old Vestal’s Gap Rd, Sterling 20164

From I-495, take VA-7 Leesburg Pike west for about 12.3 mi. Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto Va-637, Potomac View Rd and continue 1 mi. Turn left onto VA-1794, Cascades Parkway, go 0.2 mi. and turn left onto Old Vestal’s Gap Rd..Drive to the Visitor Center parking on the left. Wear mud boots if there have been recent rains. (Do not enter the park via Loudoun Park Lane. That entrance leads to the ball fields and community center and will require a walk to the Vestal’s Gap Visitor Center.)   • Clifton Institute (Fauquier Co.)

6712 Blantyre Rd, Warrenton 20187 Take 1-66 West to exit 40, to merge onto US-15 south towards Haymarket (0.4 mi), then turn right onto VA-55 West. Drive 5 mi. and turn left onto Blantyre Rd. Proceed 5.6 mi. and then turn right on to a dirt road. Drive northwest for about 0.3 mi. to the first lake and park in the parking lot on the left. Meet your leader at this parking lot. Please do not drive up to the house and park there.

  • Conway Robinson State Forest

From I-495, take I-66 west 27.6 mi. to exit 43B, US-29 North in Gainesville.  Continue on US-29 for .4 mi, turn left  into access road to parking area. There is a small parking area adjacent Route  29-S which can accommodate approximately 10 cars.   • Daniels Run Park (Fairfax Co.)

 From the Capital Beltway, take US 50 W 2.7 mi to Fairfax Circle. Exit the circle SW on Old Lee Highway. In 1.2 mi, turn left on Old Post Rd (just past Historic Blenheim on the right). Drive 1 ½ blocks to the Country Club Hills pool parking lot at end of the street. We have walk-day permission to park in the lot.  3622 Old Post Rd, Fairfax 22031   (N38 51.108 W77 17.471)

  • Dyke Marsh (Fairfax County) / Belle Haven Park

From Alexandria, take George Washington Parkway south. Cross beltway, continue 1.2 miles to Belle Haven Park entrance on the left. Meet at south parking lot.   • Fort C.F. Smith (Arlington Co.)  

From I-495 east, take Exit 72 (Spout Run Pkwy.). At traffic light, turn right on Lee Hwy. At successive traffic lights, turn left onto Spout Run Pkwy., then left onto Lorcom Lane, then right onto Fillmore St. Go one block on Fillmore, turn right onto N. 24th St. (watch for speed humps), and continue to park on left at 2411 N. 24th St. Meet in parking lot at east end of park.   • Great Falls Park (Fairfax Co.)  

From I-495, take Rte. 193 (Georgetown Pike) west 4 mi. to traffic light at Old Dominion Dr. Turn right and go about 0.8 mi. to park entrance station. Continue straight ahead to parking lot beyond the Visitor Center. Meet at Visitor Center.   • Jones Point Park (Alexandria) 

From either Hwy 1 or Washington Blvd. (George Washington Memorial Parkway) in Alexandria, turn east on Franklin Street (one-way eastbound), then turn right on South Royal Street, then turn left on Jones Point Drive and continue to parking lot next to the playground.   • Lake Accotink Park (Fairfax County)

From I-95, take Rt 644 (Old Keene Mill Rd) west to Backlick Rd.Take Backlick north approx. 1 mile to Highland St. (look for brown park sign). Turn left onto Highland St. Follow signs to Lake Accotink; take Accotink Park Rd past visitor center to parking lot near railroad trestle.   • Lake Fairfax Park (Fairfax Co.)  

From I-495, take Rt 7 west (Leesburg Pike) for 7.2 miles, turn left on Baron Cameron Ave. In 0.3 miles, turn left on Lake Fairfax Drive then go 0.7 miles to the parking lot just past the Visitor Center on the right.   • Laurel Hill Equestrian Center (Fairfax Co.)  

From I-495, take I-95 south about 7 mi. to exit 163 (Lorton Road). Continue 1.4 mi. west on Rt 642/Lorton Rd then make a left on Rt 611/Furnace Road then an immediate right on to Dairy Rd. Proceed to and meet in the parking lot.

  • Leesylvania State Park (Prince William Co.)  

From I-495, take I-95 south about 14 mi. to Exit 156 (Dale City/Rippon Landing/Rte. 784). Following the posted highway signs for Leesylvania State Park, exit east on Rte. 784. Proceed eastward 1.1 mi. to US Rte. 1. Turn right (south) on Rte. 1 and go 0.9 miles to Neabsco Road. Immediately past the Wawa service station, turn left (east) on Neabsco Rd. and proceed 2 mi. to park entrance on right. After passing through the park entrance gate, go 2.2 miles to end of paved road and park in “Picnic Area” parking lot, immediately before turn-around circle at fishing pier. State fee area.   • Leopold’s Preserve

From I-495, take I-66 west 24 mi. to exit 40 (Rt 15). Turn south onto Rt 15 (toward Haymarket) and go 0.3 mi. to Rt 55. Turn right onto Rt 55 and go 1.7 mi. to Thoroughfare Rd. Turn left onto Thoroughfare and go 0.3 mi. There are parking lots on both sides of the road. We will meet in the right hand (west) parking lot.   • Long Branch Nature Area (Arlington Co.) 

Rte. 50, east from Fairfax or west from Rosslyn, to Carlin Springs exit. South on Carlin Spgs. 0.5 mi. to Nature Center on left, just south of N. Va. Community Hospital on left.   • Mason Neck State Park (Fairfax Co.) 

From I-495, take I-95 south 7 mi. to exit 163 (Lorton Road). Left on Rte. 642 to Rte. 1. Right on Rte. 1 to Rte. 242 (Gunston Rd.). Left on Rte. 242; go 4 mi. to Mason Neck Mgmt. Area.   • Meadowood (Fairfax County)

From I-495, take I-95 south 7 miles to exit 163 (Lorton Road). Turn left on Route 642. Immediately after passing under RR tracks, (1/4 mile) turn right on Lorton Market Road, which soon becomes Gunston Cove Road. After crossing Route 1, road becomes Gunston Road. Go 1.8 miles to 10406 Gunston Road. (BLM, Lower Potomac Station Office).   • Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area (Prince William Co.)

From the I-395 & I-95 (Beltway) junction, go south on I-95 approximately 17 miles to Dumfries Road (VA 234). Turn right (west) on Dumfries Road, go a little over 6 miles, and, just before arriving in Independent Hill, turn left (south-west) on VA 642 (Aden Road). Proceed approximately 6 miles on VA 642 to the stop sign in Aden, and then turn left (south) on Fleetwood Drive (VA 611). Proceed 1 mile south from stop sign and turn left (east) on Deepwood Lane (VA 645). Continue past WMA entrance gate at 0.3 miles to very end of Deepwood Lane. Park in Cedar Run parking area (not North parking area). Wear footgear appropriate to damp grassy paths. Restroom facilities may not be available.  Link to: MERRIMAC FARM WMA

  • Neabsco Regional Park

15125 Blackburn Rd, Woodbridge 22191 From I-495, take I-95 south about 14 mi. to Exit 156 (Dale City/Rippon Landing/Rt 784). Take Exit 156A for Route 784 East toward Rippon Landing. Continue .7 mile across Rt. 1 where Dale Blvd. becomes Rippon Blvd, and then continue down the hill another .4 mile to a Stop sign, and turn right on Blackburn Rd.   • Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge (Prince William Co.)

From I-495, take I-95 south 9 mi. to (left) Exit 161 (Woodbridge). South on Rte. 1 about 2 mi. to Dawson Beach Rd. Go left on Dawson Beach 0.7 mi. to entrance gate.   • Riverbend Park  Nature Center (see Visitor Center below) (Fairfax County) 

From intersection of Georgetown Pk (Rt 193) and Old Dominion Dr (Rt 738) take Georgetown Pk west about ¼ mile to traffic light at Riverbend Rd. Turn right onto Riverbend; go 2 mi. to Jeffery Rd. Turn right and stay on Jeffery about 1.5 mi., past the main park entrance. Jeffery makes a sharp right turn and dead ends in the Nature Center parking lot.   • Riverbend Park Visitor Center  (see Nature Center above) (Fairfax County) 

From intersection of Georgetown Pk (Rt 193) and Old Dominion Dr (Rt 738) take Georgetown Pk west about 0.25 mi. to traffic light at Riverbend Rd. Turn right onto Riverbend; go 2 mi. to Jeffery Rd. Turn right and go 0.8 mi. to main park entrance sign on right. Turn right and continue 0.5 mi. to Visitor Center parking lot.   • Route 234 Wetland Mitigation Area (Manassas) 

Special meeting place: 10154 Harry J Parrish Blvd. From I-66 west, take exit 47A toward Manassas and merge onto Rt 234 (Sudley Rd). Continue on Rt 234 for 0.9 mi. to Sudley Manor Dr. Turn right and continue on Sudley Manor for 1.8 mi. Turn left onto Prince William Pkwy (Rt 234 Bypass) can continue for 3.9 mi. turn right into Cloverhill Rd and continue for .3 mi. Take first right onto Harry J Parrish Blvd to the Green Front Furniture parking lot.

  • Royal Lake – Lakeside Park

From I-495, take exit to VA-620 (Braddock Rd) and continue on Braddock Rd for 2.36 mi. Turn left onto Rt 651, Guinea Rd continue .64 mi. and stay straight at intersection onto Commonwealth Blvd (do not turn left to follow Guinea Rd) for .4 mi.   • Shenandoah River Camp at Cool Springs Battle Field 

From the 495 Beltway in Tyson’s Corner, take the VA-267 West (Dulles Toll Road) to Leesburg for 36.8 miles; take exit 1A from VA-267 West and merge onto US-15 South / VA-7 West/ Leesburg Bypass for 3.3 miles; continue straight to stay on VA-7 West for 17.1 miles; after passing Snicker’s Gap but just before the Shenandoah River Bridge, turn right at Parker Lane (F709) then go 1.4 miles to the parking lot.

To avoid the Dulles Toll Road, from the 495 Beltway in Tyson’s Corner, take VA-7 West (Leesburg Pike) to Leesburg for 47.2 miles, after passing Snicker’s Gap but just before the Shenandoah River Bridge, turn right at Parker Lane (F709) then go 1.4 miles to the parking lot.

  • Silver Lake Regional Park (Prince William Co) 

From I-495, take I-66 west 24 mi. to exit 40 (Rt 15). Turn south onto Rt 15 (toward Haymarket) and go 0.3 mi. to Rt 55. Turn right onto Rt 55 and go 0.9 mi. to Antioch Rd. Turn right onto Antioch and go 1.3 mi. to Silver Lake Rd. Turn right and proceed to park entrance at 16198 Silver Lake Rd., Haymarket, VA  20169  (N38 50.713 W77 40.035)

  • Sky Meadows State Park (Fauquier Co.)

  • Swift/Nighthawk Watch

Weather permitting, we will hold the swift watch this Sunday.  Meeting time is listed as 7:00, but 7:15 is plenty of time.  The watch is near the Walter Reed Community Center in South Arlington at the intersection of 16th St S and S Edgewood St..
Directions:  The easiest way to get there is to take Columbia Pike (Rt. 244) and turn onto S. Barton St, right if you are heading toward Washington, left if you are heading away from Washington.  Follow S. Barton St. until it makes a right angle turn and becomes 16th St. S.  The intersection with Edgewood is at the top of the rise.  If you are coming from the south on Glebe Rd., turn right onto Walter Reed Dr. and then right on 16th.  There is
parking at the Walter Reed Center and on Edgewood St.  Please remember that this is a residential area, so we need to be as considerate about our parking and milling around as possible.   Please do not park in reserved parking places.
After the swifts have done their thing we will depart in search of
nighthawks at the Air Force Memorial which is easily reached by going down Columbia Pike towards Washington.  We may have to carpool because the gate to the parking area is now closed at night.

  • Thompson Wildlife Management Area (Fauquier Co.)

From I-495, take I-66 west 51 mi. to Linden exit (Rte. 79). Go left (south) from exit ramp on Rte. 79 approx. 1000 ft. to Rte. 55. Turn left (east) on Rte. 55; go 1.2 mi. to Rte. 638 (Freezeland Rd.). Turn left (north) onto Rte. 638. Follow Rte. 638 5.3 mi. to Trillium Trail Parking Area on right (look for sign on kiosk). Parking Area is about 0.5 mi. beyond radio towers. You can purchase a permit online at  www.dgif.virginia.gov , by telephone at 1-866-721-6911 , or from a license agent—a list of license agents is on the DGIF website. You cannot get a permit at Thompson WMA.

  • Walker Nature Center, Reston  

11450 Glade Drive, Reston, VA 20191. From VA-267 W/Dulles Toll Road take exit 14 (Hunter Mill Road/VA-674). Turn left onto Hunter Mill Rd (VA-674), right onto Sunrise Valley Drive, left onto S Lakes Drive, left onto Twin Branches Rd. Then take third right onto Glade Drive. (N38.928072 W77.341311)

  • Widewater State Park  

101 Widewater State Park Rd, Stafford, VA 22554 From I-95 take exit 148 to Quantico Marine Corps Base and follow signs to Widewater State Park. Left on Russell Road and Right on Route 1 South, go 1 mi. and Left turn on Telegraph Road, go .5 mi. and Left on Widewater Road. Widewater Rd. (Route 611) turns into Arkendale Rd. (Route 633) after about four miles.
Follow this road for about 2 mi. and cross railroad tracks as you turn left onto Brent Point Road (Route 658). Entrance to park Visitor Center entrance is about 2.5 mi. on right. Meet at the Visitor Center. State Park Fee area.
